Nigeria to increase drilling activity.

Nigeria and Sao Tome: What Lies Beneath
31 August 2000

Summary

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo made a landmark visit to Sao Tome and Principe on Aug. 28. During the visit, the two governments agreed to jointly explore offshore oil reserves. Until now, exploration had stalled because of a maritime border dispute between the West African giant and its tiny two-island neighbor. While the agreement will resolve that dispute and provide an alternate source of income for the archipelago, it will more importantly provide Nigeria with an ally in its ongoing disputes with other Gulf of Guinea states over maritime borders.

Analysis

During a landmark visit to the tiny West African islands of Sao Tome and Principe, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo met with Sao Tome-Principe President Miguel Trovoado. The two discussed a maritime boundary dispute and ended the visit by signing a joint oil exploration agreement.
