Wonderful article, thanks!

The article helped me understand why the telcos didn't jump in bed with General Magic either.

I liked "the company now sells software called Workstyle Server that runs on Windows NT/2000 systems and enables corporations to provide wireless access to Microsoft Exchange information." We are working on moving our legacy services to the web and plan to incorporate VUI for some aspects. Most of our components will swim in an XML sea, so we think VUI will be an easy add-on and are not nearly ready to select a vendor for the VUI. Our platform is almost 100% Microsoft (Windows 2000, etc.) although one critical component runs on UNIX.

While there are similarities to the General Magic professional services business plan, Wireless Knowledge seems much closer to offering a shrink-wrapped plug-in. I think you too work in technology and know how resistant IS groups are to having someone else call the shots. We have been home-grown and running 7X24 since 1983. If you can't put your software in a box and ship it to us by UPS, we don't want it.

It looks like GMGC made the right move by switching its focus away from guys like WK. GMGC should have a much brighter future than the companies still trying to succeed with the old model, imho.
