Ames August Sales Increased 12.8 % Business Wire - August 31, 2000 08:49 ROCKY HILL, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 31, 2000--Ames Department Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMES) today announced net sales of $262.2 million for the four weeks ended August 26, 2000, compared with net sales of $232.4 million in the year-earlier period, an increase of 12.8 percent. Net sales for the thirty-week year-to-date period were $1.965 billion, compared with $1.908 billion in the year-earlier period, an increase of 3.0 percent. Comparable-store sales for the period were $194.0 million compared to $194.9 million last year, a decrease of 0.5 percent. This compares to a 4.2 percent increase in the prior year. Comparable-store sales for the month are based on 342 stores. For the year-to-date period comparable-store sales were $1.354 billion against $1.366 billion for the same period last year. This decrease of 0.9 percent is measured against an increase of 8.6 percent last year. Joseph R. Ettore, Ames' Chairman and CEO, said, "During the month there were good performances in several categories including ladieswear, infantswear, appliances and home entertainment. In September we will be opening ten new stores," continued Mr. Ettore. "Eight of these stores are in the Chicago area, a new market for Ames, and two are in Ohio. We are planning for strong Grand Opening sales and look forward to introducing Ames merchandise and service to these communities."
