horsegirl48: thoughts on Nokia...

NOK got whacked when it reported on 7/27 that Q3 earnings will be lower than Q2. They attributed this to a seasonally weak quarter and timing of new product introductions. They stated that Q4 (which they report in Jan. 2001) earnings will exceed Q2 and they will increase market share of their wireless phones by several percent. In summary, it will not be until early next year that the Street and institutional investors will know for certain whether the upcoming Q3 earnings miss is a one-time event or a harbinger of decreasing sales of cell phones. A similar earnings miss by ERICY and weak report from MOT have also contributed to the pall cast over the wireless sector.

For these reasons, I think NOK is dead money through Jan 2001. Since October through February is traditionally the strongest time frame for tech stocks, I do not want my money in NOK or any other stock which may underperform other tech stocks.

Disclosure: I owned a large position in NOK most of the year and sold the entire position when NOK warned in July. I am not short NOK but will not re-enter NOK anytime soon.
