STOCKWATCH: Vodafone remains strong, Merrill details hike in estimates
LONDON (AFX) - Shares in Vodafone Group PLC remained strong midmorning,
bolstered by confirmation of Merrill Lynch's increase in estimates and bullish
comments on the stock, dealers said.
The U.S. broker has raised its underlying EPS forecasts for Vodafone by 15
pct for 2002/03 after re-evaluating the stock in the wake of recent events such
as the 3G licence auctions in the UK and Germany and the disposal of Orange.
Merrill reduced its share price target to 525 pence from 590 as part of the
re-valuation exercise, but repeated its 'buy' rating and pointed out that
Vodafone remains its top European telecoms pick.
The broker noted that the European wireless market is continuing to see
strong growth, and Vodafone is well-positioned to exploit the opportunities
afforded by this buoyancy.
By 10.53 am, Vodafone shares were 17 pence higher at 295-1/4, just off an
earlier peak of 296-1/4.
