re P4 design approach

I think you may have a point here.

Kash,

You and John and Scumbria have somewhat varying opinions re the P4's technical prowess. What do you think will be its success in the pc marketplace? Will it have the same acceptance as the Atlon? Or, will it be relegated to a niche position?

Kash,

I was going to respond to your post before. It's a good reflection of my opinion on P4, with the limited data that we have at this point.

A few remarks:

re: "Perhaps when broadband access is universal say 2-3 yrs it will seem like a smart move."

Broadband may not be universal yet, but enough people have broadband to make it a significant market, especially at the high end of the PC spectrum. But P4's advantages would have to be very compelling at the expected price points.

re: "Unfortunately if PIV is a dog at todays apps and benchmarks it may be the wrong product at the wrong time."

Or the right product too early.

re: "The good news for intel seems to be tualatin. Move the PIII to 512K cache, 400Mhz bus, and 0.13 micron and u probably have a pretty good chip."

I feel real fortunate that Intel decided to screw up, and if Scumbria is right, experiment with P4, when demand is exceeding supply. P3 is certainly being heroic, I hope you are right that it can take up the slack until things get right with P4.

Nice move in AMD and Intel today (and a number of my other stocks). The statements will look good this month <g>.
