BUSH is sweating these days........
Cincinnati, Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- George W. Bush, the Republican nominee for U.S. president, wanted to talk about how, if elected, he would save the Cross family $1,900 in taxes.

Instead the Texas governor ended up defending his state's record on Medicaid and education during a press conference in Cincinnati.

It's been that kind of week for Bush, who has been buffeted by questions about his $1.3 trillion tax cut plan, a federal judge's finding that not enough Texas children are served by Medicaid and criticism about Texas students' SAT scores.

``I think he has been on defense the last week or so,'' said Andy Laperriere of the International Strategy and Investment Group, which advises Wall Street clients on political matters. ``He had a pretty nice run from March through his convention (in early August). He was hardly ever on defense.''

Bush told reporters he didn't think he had been forced to stray from his campaign strategy. ``I feel like I'm making good progress getting my message out.''

The distractions come as Bush's rival, Vice President Al Gore has pulled even in the race for president. Bush and Gore, who had trailed the governor for months, are now in a dead heat, according to the latest USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll.
