You may be familiar with Banque Paribas -- do you know what "Paribas" represents? I may be wrong on this but I seem to recall that the official name of Paribas used to be Bannque National de Paris et de Pay Bas. This was probably contracted to Paribas in much the same way as First National City Bank became Citibank. This is a hazy memory, the only type I have any more. Pays Bas, btw, means low countries... as in Netherlands.
