My car has a navigation system in it as well and when tied in with the built in cellular phone will transmit my location (both street/city and lat./long.) to a central location for assistance or emergencies with the push of a button on my part.

By chance is this OnStar? OnStar works in a similar manner and is a very cool technology. GM and Saab are doing the right thing by installing it in vehicles and giving away service for free. A future use of OnStar, I think, will be voice browsing the web. You'll use a desktop browser to setup your portal which will have news of interest, stock quotes, weather, etc. On your drive to work, you'll hit the little blue button to activate the system and say stuff like "sports" and get sports scores news for your favorite teams read to you by the computer. (The computer doing the reading will actually be in your car using a technology called VXML, though it might be possible that it's on the server side.)

The apps I write as part of my job are not anymore interesting than anything else out there. The point of the applications is to show off other technologies: gateways, web application servers, database software, and so on to sell solutions to customers (who in turn might turn this proof-of-concept apps into something industrial strength).

However, a buddy and I are thinking about writing a lightweight trading package for Palm VII: level 2, time and sales, and charting software. We really only want it for personal use but considered selling it.
