Papua New Guinea: Exxon In Pipeline Grab
The Courier-Mail (Queensland), August 30
BY JOHN MCCARTHY

Exxon has effectively grabbed control of the development of the Papua New Guinea to Queensland gas pipeline project from Chevron. Although Exxon controls 25 to 30 per cent of the gas in the project compared with just eight per cent for Chevron, Chevron has been the main driving force behind the project since 1995.

Meanwhile, it was reported on 29 August 2000 that with the project set to meet its financial close in September 2000, Exxon and Santos are seeking approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to market gas to customers. Currently, only Energex has authority from the ACCC to market the gas. The push has angered Comalco, which claims to have a binding agreement with Energex it is not willing to change.
