The best client depends on the server installed, if Exchange, an MAPI/IMAP4 client is best because it allows access to a user inbox(as does POP3) but it's also more robust allowing access to the entire mailbox as well as public folders(Outlook)and it can support collaboration apps and Office-base apps. The standard Outlook is 'bloated' as is much of MSFT's consumer offerings simply because it is has the most compatibility with all existing standard mail protocols(x400,IMAP4,POP3,SMTP,NNTP,LDAP,HTTP,MAPI, S/MIME etc.)Outlook express is fine for those who want a pretty quick straight forward and simple mail client, but if security is a concern than the only offering in the MSFT family is Outlook.
