Labor Day Travel Expected to be Up 5% Despite High Gas Costs

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 31, 2000--An estimated 33.7
million Americans are expected to travel 100 miles or more
from home this Labor Day holiday, up nearly 5 percent over
last year despite continued high gas prices, according to AAA.

The AAA Fuel Gauge Report shows the national average price
for regular unleaded gasoline today is $1.51 per gallon.
Motorists in Texas are paying an average of $1.44 a
gallon -- an increase of more than 25 cents over last
year. ``Despite the higher pump prices, many of our
members say they are still heading out this Labor Day to
take advantage of the last holiday of the summer season,''
according to Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas.

Approximately 28.3 million plan to travel by automobile,
light truck or recreational vehicle, nearly 6 percent
higher than last year's 26.8 million motorists. Holiday
travel by air, bus, rail or ship is expected to reach 5.4
million, the same number as last Labor Day. The record for
Labor Day holiday travel is 34.9 million that was set in
1997.

AAA's Labor Day travel projections are based on a national
travel survey of 1,500 adults by the Travel Industry
Association, which conducts special research for AAA.
