Split infinitives have recently been declared OK. Seems like the original prohibition was based on the fact that Latin infinitives are never split (being one word), therefore English infinitives must not be split. Recently, however, those whose business it is to pontificate on these rules have declared English to be at least the equal of Latin and thus not bound by these rules.

Now German, on the other hand, takes its infinitives, splits them, inserts a sentence or two within the word, and stacks six or seven of them at the end of each sentence.-g-
