PC intimidation.....

Good comments from StockHawk & Tekboy.

The point is, plenty of people don't know anything about troubleshooting computers. They do not want to know, and don't think they should need to know, and they are right. So anything that makes computers easier - anything that will just make the damn things work, is embraced. And that embrace is not easily given up.

Well, it's been very painful, but having started with WinTel, I have slowly trained myself beyond the point of intimidation. I troubleshoot the PCs (we now have 4), keep 'em humming, and have learned tons in the process. I am sure I am one of the few at work who have read Windows manuals, and the Dummies books, etc. I now install network cards, add memory, install zip drives, modems, and other peripherals, scsi cards, etc. But I'm no expert, I'm still pretty slow.

As for embracing anything, I really like Windows 98. It's the first OS where I have yet to ever need to reinstall the OS. If it crashes, just reboot. It always works. Safe Mode is helpful too.

BTW, I looked at keeping AOL for my wife, while using DSL, but it would have cost an extra $120/yr for essentially a portal, that we could get elswhere for free. My wife is on Hotmail/MSN now; I think I'm going to start using Yahoo regularly to check it out. My thanx for all of the public and private comments.

It's a great thread. thanx to UF, LB and MB for starting it.

This article makes it sound like simple devices are becoming more complex rather than the other way around. I don't know whether GMST technology is capable of addressing the issues discussed in the last two sentences or not.
