Gee, TP, if one knows something about what the term signifies, then one is in a position to comment. I could be wrong, that is true, but since that is always possible, it is not necessary to mention every moment.

If he didn't even try to keep kosher, for example, he would not be Orthodox. If he didn't even try to attend schul regularly on Shabbas, or form a minyan where he happened to be, he would not be Orthodox. If he kept kosher at home, but ate whatever was served outside the home, and worked on the Shabbas when it was not an emergency, it would actually be a cautious statement to say that he was not particularly Orthodox. In the same way, overwhelmingly the Orthodox, even the Modern Orthodox, oppose late term abortions and are not keen on promoting homosexuality, so it is a cautious statement to suggest that his Orthodoxy is questionable, rather than to say out and out that it is bogus.........
