I think it's possible today's rally fizzles.
All my discresionary stocks now are covered via calls. This is really the first hint of rally (as opposed to bounce-back) since March. Most rallies take a 1-2-3 push to get going. Profit taking today would leave room for push #2 when folks come back from labor day.

re: If economy is slowing, will this pressure even tech earnings comps?

Chips are increasingly in:
cars
household appliances
toys

Items that used to be for enthusiasts/nerds/wealthy, like PCs and Palms and cellphones, are becoming mainstream, working their way into the middle and lower middle classes. Home PC penetration is now above 50%.

So, the answer is: yes. IMO, the semi cycle may start to align with the general economic cycle. I think the signs are we get a soft landing in 2001. But, sooner or later, we'll have a recession that really hurts, and the market will do what it did in 1973-1974.
