Derek Blackall, from the UK's Civil Aviation Authority, said Concordes had suffered 70 previous tyre bursts since entering service in 1976, seven of them rupturing fuel tanks in the wings.

I fly BA all the time. I wonder what other secrets they are hiding?

Scumbria,

I hope there are not many. As you may know, BA is based here in Seattle and I believe that the quality of plane parts and assembly is very good at BA. However, the average age of the equipment that airlines fly has increased...in spite of what is said, I believe there is a point at which all the maintenance in the world will not counteract the overall age of the plane....there is only so much that you can do with metal fatigue. I believe that there should be a fixed limit on the age of a plane after which time it is taken out of service and dismantled for parts.

Last nite I heard the final exchanges between the Air France cockpit and the controllers before the Concorde went done....it was very disturbing. I can't imagine what must have been coursing thru their minds.
