Re: after 4 years of intense development they come out with a 750 MHz 64 bit processor, yep even ADM is in the over 1 GHz range

Haim,

AMD is a whole different story. They know what they're doing. They also got Dirk Meyer a few years ago. For the last 15 years, Dirk Meyer has been the head architect for the most powerful processors built, for other companies. Where ever the guy goes, he creates a killer processor.

In big Iron, clock speed isn't everything. For example, Sun's E10000 and IBM's S80 are roughly equal in performance using the same clock speed of processors. The difference is to get that equal performance, it takes Sun 40 more processors (24 v. 64).

Sun actually has a good design, probably second to IBM. They don't have a good foundry though. IBM is fabbing their own chips, CPQ's Alpha, and HP's PA-RISC. Sun has to rely on TI's Al process. The only one in a worse situation from a manufacturing point of view is Intel.

It will be a cold day in Hell before IBM would ever agree to fab Sun's chip. Have you ever heard McNeally in a public speech talk about IBM? IBM fabbing for Sun would signal a total breakdown in IBM management. I hate to say it, but it wouldn't surprise me.
