17:19 ET AMD TAPS MOTOROLA EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

Sep 01, 2000 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- One day after the sudden departure of Advanced Micro Devices' microprocessor chief, AMD on Friday announced that Harry Wolin has joined the chipmaker as vice president of intellectual property.

In this newly created position, Wolin will be responsible for Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s intellectual property matters, direct the technology law department, and report to the office of the general counsel and secretary.

Prior to joining AMD (stock: AMD), Wolin was with Motorola Inc. (stock: MOT) for 12 years and held a number of positions in its legal organization, primarily in intellectual property law. Most recently, Wolin served as vice president and director of legal affairs for Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector, where he was responsible for worldwide legal matters, including intellectual property.

"Harry brings a wealth of experience in intellectual property strategy, development, and licensing, as well as other sophisticated technology transactions," said Thomas M. McCoy, senior vice president, secretary, and general counsel at AMD, Sunnyvale, Calif. "Harry's decision to join our organization is an affirmation of AMD's stature as a world-class intellectual property producer."

Wolin, whose principal office will be in Austin, Texas, said, "AMD is a technology leader in high speed microprocessor and flash memory design as well as in process development and manufacturing. This, along with its unique business position makes it a very intriguing place to practice intellectual property law."

On Thursday, Larry Hollatz, group vice president of AMD's computation products group and one of the highest officials in the company, resigned without explanation. No successor has yet been named, though CEO Hector De Ruiz is filling in until a replacement is found. Like Wolin, Ruiz came to AMD from Motorola SPS.
