How come the dots don't connect? :-( Point 1: 09:22 ET Flextronics (FLEX) 86: Morgan Stanley Dean Witter raises FY01 estimate by 20 cents to $1.80 and FY02 view by 30 cents to $2.40 per share. Firm reiterates OUTPERFORM rating.... Banc of America Sec. also adjusting estimates after company guided estimates higher during yesterday's conference call. Says firm guided revenue estimate to a range of $11.1-$11.6 bln and EPS to $1.77-$1.82 (vs current mean view of $1.65). Point 2: 09:01 ET Solectron (SLR) 46 1/8: Morgan Stanley Dean Witter adding shares of electronics manufacturer to its Model Portfolio Point 3: 08:36 ET Micron Tech (MU) 78 1/2: DLJ downgrade of DRAM chip maker has sent stock reeling in pre-market. Issue currently trading at $71. ++++++++++++++++++++++ Analysts seem to still like the growth prospects for the ECMs. How are these companies going to grow if KLIC doesn't dice, slice and wirebond more wafers?; or AMAT etal don't sell more equipment to produce more wafers? Have they figured out that the 128Mb chip is becoming the standard supplanting the 64Mb chip? Was the MU downgrade due to them following a trailing edge part? I'm starting to suspect that the SEC's Fair Disclosure proposal has caused some companies to become less open with the AnalCyst community. This, in turn, has caused some of them to get their noses out of joint. i.e. "If you won't continue to give me inside information, I'll downgrade you." If that's the case, they can only downgrade so far before they become totally irrelevant. FWIW, Ian
