Since Dennis the successor stated that they have three candidates; the reason must be that GE needed a chairman who has manufacturing operations experience to handle the diversities beyond matrix management.

Having some one from the outside, would be disastrous. Changing direction again for giant GE would be a difficult task. But is that a possibility, is there more to financial services? Is there more to financial services beyond the present, to achieve higher than 11% growth? Add automobile industry? Or add banking, insurance and brokerage combined industry?

It is still an interesting business plan yet to be written, by Welch perhaps?
