"are you talking about the 1900 MHz spectrum auctions, or the "pioneer" preferences, or what."

Yes, both of them.

Mötörölä is fun way of spelling Motorola, with a lot
of exotic dots, just like shampoos and other popular
consumer items. (sorry, sounds even more fun in finnish)

"Check old FCC decisions from the late 80s"

Pioneering USA inventions in winding RF-coils, which lost
in the congress (GSM was just an already invented
european protocol).

"no joy of WAPping, banking, mobile buynselling, SMSsing etc for you"

Need to be compatible with analog pioneering AMPS through
AMPS-TDMA at 30kHz bandwidth, no digital control channel for
SMS nor WAPping.

Ilmarinen.

P.S. Looking deeper into my old soul I must admit I see remenicences of the Mötötörölä-Nokia hinged mouse trap and
diode case of late 80s, leading to the banana model of the
present 7110 WAP, click, connecting people.
(When USA ensured no GSM operators for some time to come)
