"Never heard of EGPRS, I take it? "

I'm talking about the 80s, when it all kind of happened.

Allen,

<< Sprint originally wanted GSM, but there no GSM-1900 systems back then, Europe being 1800MHz. So Sprint took the second, less preferable, choice of CDMA. Just a fun story I heard >>

I'll throw in another version of the story. When WirelessCo made their technology decision in August 1995, GSM was indeed being considered, as was CDMA.

There were working GSM-1900 (then called PCS-1900) handsets in both Overland Park and Chicago and their affiliatte APC was building out a PCS-1900 net. The decision turned on vendor financing. APC successfully launched its Ericsson PCS-1900 network (Sprint Spectrum) less than 4 months later with handsets from Motorola & Ericsson, and 15 months after the technology decision was made, when CDMA-1900 handsets became available, PCS Sprint was launched on a major scale. That's the fun story I heard.
