Gore is an ingrate, which is one of the worst things one can be in politics. Politics is about respect, among other things. If you do not receive the proper respect from someone who owes it, your stature is diminished, and you have to make a demonstration of muscle to get it back. At some point, the unions are going to have to retaliate......

Frank: I did a little more digging this morning and came up with some more numbers on how labor votes. But first, I just saw the latest Newsweek poll and the numbers are astonishing. (Can it be correct?) The question asked was: Suppose the 2000 election were held today. Who would you vote for? The results in the national survey:

Gore 49%
Bush 39%
Nader 3%
Buchanan 1%

Individual state polling in Iowa and Vermont was fairly similar to the national results. Anyway, back to the labor vote. This is how labor voted in the last three presidential elections based on exit polling.

1988: 24% of voters interviewed in exit polls said they were from labor households. They voted for Dukakis 56% and Bush 44%.

1992: 19% said they were from labor households. They voted for Clinton 55%, Bush 24% and Perot 21%.

1996: 23% said they were from labor households. They voted for Clinton 59%, Dole 30% and Perot 9%.

Bottom line: Only 11 out of 20 people who consider themselves labor regularly vote Democratic, at least in presidential races. Think about that.

Have a nice Labor Day holiday.

Frank,
The only thing Gore cares about is the soft money unions provide. He knows that the vote is split among members, but the hefty campaign donations from the leaders are what make unions important. The largest group flapjack left out was government employee unions, who are miffed at Gore for his reform, i.e., job-cutting efforts. I think you can throw the military in there, even though they are non-union. The troop cuts haven't made them happy campers.knc
