Government to Begin Crackdown on Illegal Duplication of Software by Lee Won-ho Aug.30.2000 The Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) and Police authorities will crack down on the illegal duplication and reproduction of computer software from September 18 to November 30. Private organizations such as universities and other educational institutes along with government offices will be targeted in the investigation. Recent policies that aim to stimulate computer use, particularly the Internet, have fostered an onslaught of illegal duplication of copyrighted computer software. Reproduction of intellectual property is raging in computer academies and Internet Cafes. In addition, hyper-speed Internet connections such as ADSL and Cable Modems, make the situation worse. It takes only two or three minutes to download a whole CD-title through these connections. "The first investigation of the illegal duplication of copyrighted software in 1998, resulted in a 256% increase in computer software exports that year," said a MIC spokesman. This is clear evidence that the violation of intellectual property impedes the computer software industry in Korea. english.joins.com

S100, thanks for the headsup on Korea's IS-95C startup! How exciting. GPRS and other GSM systems are now behind CDMA and that process will accelerate. CDMA has grown spectacularly and developed spectacularly technologically while VW40 and other W-CDMA efforts flounder around and fail. GPRS is a slow joke by comparison. EDGE will be stillborn. WWeb is going to be a huge seller. People love images. Everyone but everyone will have a digital camera on their cellphone. Just a huge, huge seller. Mqurice
