Search engines are nice, but instant access to info is so much nicer. The :CueCat from Digital:Convergence arrived in my mailbox the other day; this new purring peripheral will scan any UPC or ISBN code and bring up a corresponding Web page. Wow, this toothpaste is really good, what else do these guys make? WARNING: the :CueCat is highly addictive. I started out scanning barcodes on books and magazines, then moved on to food products. Within the first hour, I was scouring my home for anything with a barcode. What? This matchbook doesn't have a UPC? What about the curtains? Someone get the stepladder, I'm going to check the ceiling fan. And if that wasn't enough, it'll interact with (certain) television signals as well! Never enter another lengthy URL as long as you live... well, almost. As practical usage goes, I've used it to find recipes online and to gain instant access to ordering information for a number of products. Setting up the :CRQ software was simple. The CD-ROM features step-by-step instructions explained by a man who sounds like C-3PO; "You are 66% digitally converged. Come along, R2." A word of advice: when you enter your Activation Code, be sure not to leave any empty spaces on the end. It saves a lot of unnecessary headaches. Hey -- you've already got a mouse, so you might as well get the cat. It's the natural order of life, after all. The cheese stands alone... but you can scan that, too. So, do you want one? It's FREE! If there's a Radio Shack nearby, you can pick up the :CueCat package immediately! Be the first on your block to work the Web with whiskers. Even Sprocket (my dog) is having a ball with this thing. -- Chris Pirillo tc
