COMEX copper jumps on fund buying

NEW YORK, Sept 5 (Reuters) - COMEX copper settled sharply higher Tuesday on fund
buying, racking up new highs in the active and spot contracts as prices chugged toward
$2,000 a tonne in London.

New York copper futures chased the three-months price on the London Metal Exchange
(LME) after declines in warehouse stocks gave prices a boost on Monday and Tuesday,
traders said.

COMEX most-active December jumped 1.50 cents to 91.25 cents a lb, traded from 90.05 to a new contract high of 91.40
cents.

Analyst Mike Harvey at Pioneer Futures said, ``90.80 cents was the high back in January. We took that out and we closed
above it, which is technically huge.''

Spot September rose 1.70 to 90.60 cents, a peak for the front month since November 11, 1997, in a range from 89.50 to
90.70 cents.

Back months ended 1.25-1.65 higher.
