Scumbria - RE: "I wish AMD would kill Duron, and concentrate on the high end."

Why? High end is limited number of units...

Unless you mean server processors. Lots of money there, IF AMD get Mustang + 760MP out and in very reliable Compaq systems.

I wish AMD would kill Duron, and concentrate on the high end.

If they continue to sell it at around 65 ASP level, I agree it is wasted production capacity. But if they discontinue the Duron 600 and 650 and sell instead, 750 and 800 to raise the ASP in the $100-110's, it will be both profitable and good for the market share.

Intel have 3/4 of their production for PIII, so the demand is very high. It is obvious that I would prefer to see AMD penetrating $THAT$ market instead of the lower-end one.

But until the mustang family, the only market accessible to AMD is the retail one where the celeron is the king. I just hope that AMD will balance well its production. Also remember that as the k6 ramp down, more fab space is available. The retail market give visibility to AMD.

When the mustang family arrive, AMD hopefully should step in the business arena were the Morgan (value) will be one of the way to penetrate. Intel is selling a lot of celeron there. Once again, AMD wants to balance its production with the more weight possible in the High-end side.

Isn't that just about what is going on right now - by default?

I disagree.. having competition on both the low end and the high end prevents Intel from getting into a price war with AMD at either end. I will reference you to an excellent column JC wrote at TigerInvestor back in April, (or actually.. I'll let JC do it ;).. I am sure he can repeat the particulars) where he stated much the same thing.
