Gore now ahead in the electoral count. Analysis is on voter.com. Gore has the momentum. Bush must do something to regain the momentum or he is done. Gore has 20 point lead in voters over 50. Bush positions on social security and prescription drug benefit are hurting him and might cause him to lose Florida which is now dead even.

From the article to which you provide the link:

In 1987, Gore's eagerness to play up his image as an investigative reporter led to one of the worst gaffes of his short-lived campaign for the presidency. Gore told The Des Moines Register that his reporting "got a bunch of people indicted and sent to jail." The Memphis Commercial Appeal caught the exaggeration, and newspapers around the country ran stories on it. At the same time, it emerged that the Gore campaign was distributing copies of two articles that made similarly inflated claims.

Sadly, this one wasn't even a gaffe--it's Gore's own litmus test:

Litmus Test for Joint Chiefs

“Last week Vice President Al Gore vowed that if elected president, he would lift the ban on homosexuals serving openly in the military. He further stated that he would impose a ‘litmus test’ who anyone he nominated to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, appointing only those candidates who supported his policy. As a former member of the Joint Chiefs and the father of a son now serving his nation in the military, I am extremely concerned at the prospect of a president who would use a social or political issue as a measure of an officer’s fitness to serve at the highest levels. While Mr. Gore is now rapidly backpedaling, I believe we already have the true measure of his attitude. ... There can be no question in the minds of the American people and those serving in the military that an officer’s nomination and confirmation to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff must be based on military experience, military expertise and leadership ability. It cannot be based on support or lack thereof for a current social or political position. As a nation we must never allow our elected leaders to subordinate an issue of national security for the sake of political gain.”

- Gen. Charles C. Krulak, former commandant of the Marine Corps, Wall Street Journal, 1/12/00
