This is just an opinion piece from Individual Investor. Take it as opinion only.

What are your long- and short-term outlooks for Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - Quotes, News, Boards)?
I'm fairly negative on Lucent, which is probably not a view shared by all of my colleagues at Individual Investor. I'm wary of companies that disappoint when they report earnings. It seems once a pattern of disappointment emerges, it tends to continue. Lucent's balance sheet problems finally caught up with it this year. Until there's more evidence that a meaningful turnaround is taking place, I would avoid this stock.

If you don't care for Lucent, how about Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT - Quotes, News, Boards) for the long term?
I think Nortel is a much better company than Lucent, and clearly the market agrees with me, as evidenced by the two charts on the stocks. Nortel is better managed, has very promising technology and apparently is on the prowl for strategic acquisitions. I would definitely sell Lucent to buy Nortel.
