Lizzie, I think there are many people immigrating to America who become very productive and valued citizens. I, like you, do not want them to feel any sense of rejection or condescension on our parts toward them or their religion. However, I believe religion is the foundation of true peace and tolerance. I don't think any of us should do anything but show utmost respect for the other person along with their religion. The worst thing is for religion, whatever faith, to be relegated to something not to be respected and honored. One of the maxims of my religion, and deemed 2nd most important by Jesus was to love your neighbor as yourself. He didn't say if they are Christian or Jew or Muslim. We must be tolerant of each other. Our first direction is to love God with all our soul, with all our heart and with all our might. If we do those two things how can we not be tolerant, love our neighbors and want to help those in need?
