SK Telecom Stops Handset
Supplies to Cut Market Share
RDSL

31 August 2000

SK Telecom of the Republic of Korea has been forced to stop
supplying mobile handsets to retailers in order to comply with a
government ruling requiring the company to reduce its market share to
less than 50%.

The government ruling is a condition of approval for the company's
acquisition of rival firm Shinsegi Telecom. Since the acquisition was
announced, the market share for the combined group has fallen by
0.1% to 57.52%.SK Telecom claims that stopping supplies to retailers
is its last option, as other efforts to reduce market share have not
worked. The company claims that the move will reduce consumer
choice and harm small retailers.

The company attributes its failure to reduce its market share to a
government ban on the subsidizing of mobile phones by operators,
which has led to a decline in the number of mobile subscribers.
