Analysts characterized the patent as a potent legal weapon that could be used against ATA flash-card manufacturers. Some, however, said they were skeptical that Sunnyvale, Calif.-based SanDisk could wield it successfully.

"I doubt they stand a good chance of making it stick," said Bruce Bonner, senior analyst with Dataquest Inc., San Jose. "ATA cards have become a de facto standard in the industry."

While the CompactFlash flash disk was developed by SanDisk, the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) is an industry-wide standards body. In theory, SanDisk could attempt to legally coerce vendors using flash-based, industry-standard PCMCIA ATA cards to pay the company royalties, analysts said.

My comments about SNDK CEO and 1988 patents still stands
and investors should not forget the 17 year limitations.
Drug companies have this 17 year problem all the time and
the stock market reacts to this 17 year limitation.
