There is a parallel between NT and ALA. NT wouldn't sell much telephone switches here in Europe. They've bought STC back in the late eighties with this aim.

Now what they could sell here? Transport. It is their niche market. Look to ALA. ALA doesn't sell telephone switches in the US. They went there and sell access. Is as simple as that.

Well, Don Smith can tell that it was reading a book that made him seen the light but things in fact ends up being: It was the only thing they could have done: Sell Transport for Trans-European Carriers.

Then look to LU: They were hell bent on selling 5ESS and the US WEST's of this world hell bent on selling a second telephoen line for their customers. You are seeing the results.
