(and I actually like JC Penney- too bad they don't execute better <g> )

Victor,

I have nothing against JC Penneys. I suspect given time, they will figure out what needs to be done and do it. It is like investing in the new economy. The old ways did not work. I can prove that <VBG> Retailing changes are similar in a sense.

I guess its a question of how much of walmart's success is at the expense of other retailers v.
actual increased consumer spending.

I can't say I know. I wish I did. It is very difficult to quantify these numbers. Sears by the way better watch Wal-mart since Wal-mart is testing selling major appliance in about thirty of their stores. Just food for thought.

BTW I don't believe the Govt's measurement of personal savings includes stocks, 401k, or roth
accts or the new tax-exempt education savings acccts.

These are items I do not know. You are likely correct which means the "savings rate" number is inaccurate.
