Saddam Hussein To Receive Cancer Treatment, News Reports Say
By Claire Shoesmith

Baghdad, Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is being treated for cancer and a family council led by his youngest son is ready to take control of the country if he dies, news reports said, citing the London-based Arabic newspaper, Asharq al-Awsat.

Saddam has lymph cancer. He'd been suffering from inflamed joints, breathing difficulties, poor vision and temporary memory loss before agreeing to start chemotherapy treatment, Agence France-Presse and Ananova, a virtual broadcaster, reported, citing the newspaper.

An unidentified Arab doctor said one of the presidential palaces in a Baghdad suburb has been turned into a private clinic for the president, the Arabic paper said.

Saddam called a family meeting and appointed his son, Qussay, to head a council which would run Iraq in the event of his death or if he is no longer fit enough to carry on, the paper cited independent Iraqi sources as saying, according to the reports. The family council already plays a part in the running of Iraq's affairs, the paper said.

If the above is true, it could represent a real threat to the always-tenuous Iraqi oil supply. Note that the article implied that Saddam already had visual and respiratory symptoms, implying (perhaps) that this would be a relatively advanced (read: poor prognosis, resistant to treatment) form of the disease. Knowing that S.O.B.'s history, I can't imagine him stepping down unless he was moribund. All of this implies a change of power in Iraq, and the (rather ominous) possibility of full scale civil war. Does not bode well for oil and gas supplies in the near to intermediate future, IMO.....
