Charles, you are precisely right, the idea that we should have to pay as little as possible directly for medical expenses is bizarre and makes the cost of medical insurance skyrocket. Even a $1000 deductible would bring the price down substantially. A $3000 deductible with, essentially, catastrophic insurance would ensure basic coverage to practically everyone for anything important. Combine either of those things with tax sheltered medical accounts, and we have a means to increase coverage for all but the truly poor, who generally qualify for Medicaid, anyway.......
