Yeah, we just built a subway from the valley to downtown here in LA for a few billion. Made the City Council and the Contractors happy, and is a total boondoggle. They built it though an unstable area that will blow out in the first major earthquake.

OT fast US train (Oct 99 press release)

High-speed Acela Express trains will operate up to 150 mph and make
limited stops, such as Providence.

The 26-mile Kingston section of the new electrification system was the first to
be energized. The first sections in Massachusetts, a 34-mile stretch south of
Sharon, and in Connecticut, a 22-mile section between Branford and Old
Saybrook, are scheduled to be energized next week.
