REDMOND, Wash. (CBS.MW) - Microsoft is expected to announce a digital TV component to its next version of Windows, according to published reports on Tuesday.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft (MSFT: news, msgs) plans to offer its software for digital television set-top boxes dubbed Microsoft TV.

It'll be part of the so-called Whistler version of its PC operating system due out in the latter half of next year.

The software giant plans to demonstrate the technology at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam on Friday, said the newspaper, which cited "people familiar with Microsoft strategy."

Microsoft plans to challenge competitors such as Open TV (OPTV: news, msgs) by offering consumers the opportunity to use a single device to power their TV sets and PCs.

Shares of Microsoft rose 37.5 cents to $70.19 on Friday.
