I still get the CCBN alerts--a nice move
today on Ariad. Sure wish I'd held on longer
during the January romp (especially on my 65k
of warrants! I saw your message on the aria
thread--heck I was in to a lot of warrants
near the lows...but sadly, out of all by $3 or
so, most closer to $2, ha!)

Okay, back on the topic of gene therapy, I just
discovered a recent HSV-tk Savio Woo patent.

Patent Number 6066624
Issue Date 2000 05 23
Assignee Baylor College of Medicine
Inventor(s) Woo, Savio L. C.
Chen, Shu-Hsia

Title Gene therapy for solid tumors using adenoviral vectors comprising suicide genes and cytokine genes

A past Baylor company was GeneMedicine, now Valentis

(also GeneSwitch w/ Baylor) but Valentis doesn't really
have a vector for this I would guess (?).

More on that Baylor patent follows

Abstract The present invention provides a novel method of treating localized solid tumors and papillomas in an individual, as well as metastatic carcinomas. The method comprises delivering a suicide gene, by way of a recombinant
adenoviral vector or other DNA transport system, into the tumor, papilloma or wart of an individual. Subsequently, a
prodrug, such as the drug gaciclovir.TM., is administered to
the individual. Additionally, the present invention provides a method for treating solid tumors, papillomas, warts and metastatic carcinomas, said method comprising introducing both a suicide gene and one or more cytokine genes into the tumor, papilloma or wart of an individual, and subsequently administering a prodrug to the individual. The methods of the present invention may be used to treat several different types of cancers and papillomas, including colon carcinoma, prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, hepatoma, brain lymphoma and head and neck cancer.

Exmp. Claim 1
Ex Claim text A method of causing regression of a solid tumor in a mammal, comprising the steps of: administering an adenoviral vector directly into said tumor, wherein said vector is comprised of a DNA sequence encoding a suicide gene, and one or more cytokine genes, wherein said genes are operably linked to a promoter, and wherein said tumor expresses said suicide gene and said one or more cytokine genes; and administering a prodrug in amounts sufficient to cause regression of said tumor when said prodrug is converted to a toxic compound by said suicide gene.
