Avanex Passes Another Growth
Milestone With 1,000th Employee

FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Avanex Corporation (Nasdaq: AVNX - news)
announced today that it has passed another significant growth milestone with the addition of its
1,000th employee, an increase of more than twenty-fold in less than 18 months.

``The phenomenal growth of the Avanex workforce mirrors the success we have had with the
introduction of advanced solutions to increase the speed and efficiency of next-generation
communications networks,'' Walter Alessandrini, president and CEO of Avanex, said. ``It is yet
another illustration that our unique photonic processing technologies are becoming an industry
standard for adding value to optical network architectures.''

The Avanex workforce has grown to its current size from 60 in June 1999. In addition, Avanex has
expanded its headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Fremont twice within the past fiscal year.
Each expansion has roughly tripled the amount of space available.

Last week, Avanex also announced it is expanding its Photonics Center at a new location in
Richardson, Texas. The company will occupy approximately three times the space of the current
site.

The Photonics Center(TM) houses a dedicated 3,000-kilometer simulated optical network that
allows Avanex network and system application professionals to work with carriers and systems
integrators to optimize their optical architectures. The simulated network also showcases the
capabilities of Avanex's unique photonic processors.

``Avanex occupies facilities in Fremont and Richardson that support the highest levels of
manufacturing quality, process controls, product development, correlation and validation of optical
processes within a network, discreet system modeling and customer training,'' Alessandrini said.
``As the demand for our photonics processors continues to grow, we are committed to supporting
our customers' need for next-generation solutions, and we are committed to providing our
employees with a work environment that contributes to their continued high performance.''
