Chip people what does this Stepping info bode for Willy?

From Johan at Ace's
Hey Mike,

How final was this silicon? Did the motherboard have relatively new chipset drivers? Isn't the 194 fps (Quake 3 normal) a typo? I think 149 is more close to the truth, considering the High Quality numbers.

BTW, Saw you on the IDF. Was a bit dissapointed that you did not gave Pat Gelsinger and Andy Grove a harder time ;).

From Mike McGee of the Register:
Hi Johan

Saw you too, and meant to say hello. I guess the hangover afflicting me had its effect on Gelsinger and Grove. Or maybe I've lost my appetite for red meat or something.

My info is it was stepping B0, B2 samples in early October.

As you know, we don't have labs etc here at The Reg and it's only Andrew Thomas who gets his hands dirty inside PCs on purpose -- we don't have the silicon ourselves.

Relying on you guys to get your mitts on the gear and put it through its paces.

Best from London

Mike

Mike, aren't you supposed to be here in Taiwan this month?

You were right about the P4 and the Taiwanese mobo makers, no one wants to touch it here, they all wait for the second coming with the 478pin version. None of my sources have any boards, they didn't even bother to get the free system from Intel!

It seems that ALI recently got a few design wins by companies not using their parts before, should mean that VIA is having problem with their DDR...
