Motorola to Establish $30 Million Research and Development Center in Scotland

STAMFORD, Conn., Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. electronics giant Motorola (NYSE: MOT - news) has chosen Scotland as the location for a major semiconductor research and development center, creating up to 550 new jobs by 2005.

The $30 million facility, which will form part of the world-leading Alba Campus in Livingston, Scotland, will focus on ``embedded software'' and partnering with ``system on chip'' (SOC) design technology. SOC technology increases the number and range of functions of a product such as a mobile phone by integrating the major components of the systems on a single silicon chip.

According to Andy McDonald, director of Locate in Scotland in North America, Motorola's decision to site this highly
significant development in Scotland highlights the huge strides Scotland has made in becoming a global center of
excellence in communications, software and SOC design. ``This announcement is a clear signal to the microelectronics industry that Scotland is the place to be in this technology, a technology which is at the cutting edge of almost every form of leading IT,'' says McDonald.

Terry Heng, Senior Vice President and General manager of Motorola Global Software Group, said: ``We are all
tremendously excited about this project which will feed into all of Motorola's existing Scottish businesses. Our
company has been in Scotland for more than 30 years and this investment complements other recent investments by
Motorola that will set us up for a further 30 years.''

Motorola Global Software Group (GSG) plans to enhance its existing global software development resource to maintain its position at the forefront of technological developments leading to improved communication products, e.g. mobile phones, including more highly advanced hand-held mobile communications and computing devices. The center will develop software which is embedded in automated production lines for support of automated manufacturing processes, particularly systems-on-chip integrated onto mobile phone manufacturing, as carried out only a few miles away in Easter Inch.

Michael Kay, Systems Design Operations Manager for Motorola said: ``We are also delighted to be able to increase our links with the Alba Centre, the Institute for System Level Integration and the VCX. The ISLI was a key factor in our
decision to bring this project to Scotland as we need access to high quality graduates and experienced engineers.
We have been working with the Institute for some time and are keen to continue to expand this relationship.''

Initially the project will be located in temporary premises while a new purpose built facility of around 50,000 sq. ft. is constructed. The new facility will become available early in 2002. A further 50,000 sq. ft. will be added in 2004.

The project was won for Scotland by Locate in Scotland (LIS), the UK-government agency that helps foreign companies establish operations in Scotland. The agency has four North American offices, which are located in Stamford, CT; Chicago, IL; Redwood Shores, CA; and Houston, TX.For more information about LIS, access the web
