Novartis named in two new Ritalin suits-WSJ

NEW YORK, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Novartis AG , maker of the drug Ritalin, was named in lawsuits filed in California and New Jersey on behalf of consumers, accusing the Swiss pharmaceuticals group of conspiring with the American Psychiatric Association to ``create'' a disease, the Wall Street Journal reported in its electronic edition on Thursday.

Ritalin is used to treat attention-deficit hyper-activity disorder. The cases seek billions of dollars in damages, and are likely to be followed by suits on behalf of consumers in other states, the lawyers told the newspaper.

A similar suit was filed in a Texas state court in May. At that time, Novartis said the claims in the suit were without merit.

The lawsuits, which seek class-action status, contend that Novartis, its subsidiary Ciba-Geigy, and the psychiatric association, conspired to create a broad-based definition of hyperactivity disorders in the standard medical text used by doctors, the newspaper reported.
