I don't pretend to make any sense out of Sudan politics and troubles, but I did have the impression that when offered partition, the SPLA rejected it. All I could see was that they were afraid to be on their own and wanted a strong government to guarantee them things they could not attain on their own. Or they wanted a be a power in the entire Sudan and not just the south.

I think the only real solution is some kind of outside authority being imposed, as in former Yugoslavia. Otherisw it seems just a gradual fight to extinction of one party or the other. They can't work it out rationally among themselves.
