When the doctrine first gained currency, it actually applied to those who had not had a chance to be evangelized. Just as the patriarchs and prophets were liberated from Hell after Jesus descended there, so many held that the righteous pagans, like Socrates, must have been liberated. Some thought that they lived in a tolerable part of Hell, cut off from God, but under the pale warmth of the Sun of Reason, and able to enjoy a rational existence, as portrayed by Dante in the Inferno. With the discovery of the new world, and the realization of the extent to which millions had not been evangelized, the idea of invincible ignorance was extended to those who had been deprived of the Gospel, but tried to live good lives by the lights given them, among the peoples of the world. As time went on, Catholics generally began to recognize that there might also be people cut off by circumstance in their midst, and therefore that there might be an extension of invincible ignorance to those who were not in a position to be instructed properly........

There is also a category of what one might term liberal evangelicals, who tend to be influenced by CS Lewis, in the English speaking world. Just as Lewis knew that there had to be a final reckoning, but couldn't bear the thought that God wouldn't make a sort of last attempt to reach them, and turn them towards Himself, away from their petty self- centeredness, so many evangelicals are not prepared to say that they know certainly that God will not reach out before judgment, even after death, to try to save people.
