FCEL has been strong since mid April and I like the volume, especially the past month.

I have been closely following about 25 fuel cell and related alternative energy companies. On August 23, I recorded that 13% of FuelCell Energy’s outstanding shares were held by institutions. I notice that now 19% of outstanding shares are held by institutions. That accounts for the recent strong volume and I expect that there is more to come.

Institutions are looking for ways to invest in the power transformation that is coming. Deregulation, high oil and natural gas prices and low supplies, increasing demands for higher quality reliable electricity, environmental concerns and new technologies open many opportunities.

I am usually wary of companies that alter their equity structure (splits, secondary offerings) more than once a year. Given the recent run up in price, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a pull back shortly after the split.

I agree that FCEL and BLDP are the top players in the fuel cell area. Global Thermoelectric also has to be considered one of the top players. There are many second tier companies and lots of fuel cell and alternative energy companies coming into the market.

What I like about this industry is that there doesn’t have to be one winning technology. Different technologies can be used in different applications. The technology used to made battery replacements can be different from the technology used to power automobiles or the technology used for electric power distribution.

There are going to be many winners in this field.
