TIW Ends Talks to Join Italy's UMTS License Auction, Paper Says

--From AOL. MQ, we should have squared away this spectrum stuff in SD. 'Spectrum for the Masses'! A NZ and an American. We could have made millions.-- Marty

Milan, Sept. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Telesystem International Wireless Inc., a Canadian company that won a new mobile-phone license in the U.K., broke off alliance talks with TuMobile, a group bidding for a similar permit in Italy, the Italian financial daily Il Sole/24 Ore reported, without citing sources.

TIW strategists have decided to take their time before committing the company to the auction of so-called third- generation wireless licenses in Italy, the paper said.

The Montreal-based mobile-phone company may still form an agreement with one of the successful bidders, once the groups' plans are clearer, according to Il Sole.

TuMobile, which is centered around Tu Tlc Utilities SpA, a small Italian traditional phone company, is competing against Italy's four mobile telephone operators and foreign companies such as Telefonica SA and Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. for one of five licenses, which will allow companies to offer faster Internet access on wireless devices.
