Mike, as I understand it, it is because you have the right to exercise the option and at that moment you will be on "credit" or pledge in some fashion until the dust settles. It is along the same line of thinking as a 401(k) with a long put position which you can't do a cross close out (put and go long then cross) if the MMs ain't giving you intrinsic on the last day. i.e. no shorting in a qualified plan.
