John's comments are very interesting, especially from his perspective as an engineer:

The investor in me does see value in an independent company working in one industry micro-segment like Juniper for cisco. This prevents integrated competitors like Nortel and Lucent from presenting an end-to-end solution.

For all the marketing hype Nortel throws against 'big dumb routers' - they have been unable to deliver one. The sad thing is that the industry segments they dominate - SONET ADM (add drop mux) and Metro DWDM really are dumb boxes. Despite all the sophisticated optics - they, at a software level, are little more than TDM devices.

. I wish we could get John over here too; it would be neat to get the expertise of a Cisco engineer.

RE: John

I read the post, went to his profile, and read about 10 more of his posts. He posts about twice a month. I bookmarked him, and I suggest that everybody here does the same.
